Debt-ridden man kills pregnant wife, son

A 35-year-old man was arrested for allegedly strangulating his pregnant wife and three-year-old son due to depression over poor financial condition in Keshavpuram area of North-west Delhi on Saturday.

The accused identified as Vikram Bhatia was in an inebriated state when he committed the crime, said DCP (Northwest) Vijay Singh.

Bhatia, a Delhi-based architect, had moved to a new rented apartment at Keshavpuram a month ago.

The accused has been booked under Section 302 (Murder) of IPC, said police.

The deceased's bodies, identified as Nitu (wife) and Naveen (son) were sent for autopsy and were later handed over to their relatives, told police. On autopsy it was found that Nitu was pregnant.

The incident came to light when Nitu's brother went to visit her on Friday evening and got perturbed after nobody opened the gate. He informed the landlord to break open the door as it was locked from inside and thereafter found the three members were lying motionless, said police. A note was found wherein it was written, "Nobody helped me."

Nitu's brother informed the police and three of them were rushed to the hospital where Nitu and Naveen were declared brought dead and Bhatia was found to be excessively drunk.

As it did appear to be a failed attempt of family suicide, Bhatia later confessed to have killed his wife and son, said police.

According to the police Bhatia first killed his wife and then his son. On further interrogation, Bhatia told the police that he was debt-ridden and was seeking for financial help all over -- including from his in-laws. He also told that few helped initially but later gave up, for which he was reported to be very depressed lately, said police.
