The Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital has decided to collaborate with the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University for opening its medical college, the proposal for which is yet to be approved by the Government. The officials of IP University visited the hospital in the last week of July and have given a conditional acceptance to the medical college demanding that the teaching staff would be hired by the hospital.
The hospital has been pushing for a complete redevelopment plan since long. However, in their recent resubmitted proposal to the Government, the hospital has sought permission for a medical college to be set up. While permissions for the college and the land are yet to be given, the hospital has finished all formalities regarding the affiliation of the college. “We needed to affiliate the college with a university as the courses need to be recognised by the Medical Council of India. We approached IP University and they were very positive about it,” said Dr Bharat Singh, Medical Superintendent of DDU Hospital.
Officials from the IP University had even visited the hospital for an inspection. “The officials from the university came on July 25 after which they submitted a conditional acceptance to the offer,” informed Singh.
Nalini Ranjan, chief public relations officer of IP University, said that the university will be affiliated with the medical college but won’t hire teachers. “While the affiliation of the medical college is with us, the university will not be hiring teachers for it. The hospital will be in-charge of hiring the complete faculty. However, the university will conduct the admissions and take care of the entire procedure regarding students,” said Ranjan.
Singh informed that most of the teachers would be doctors working at the hospital presently. “Our existing doctors with a post graduate degree and sufficient experience in teaching can be recognised as teachers by the university. Thus, most of our staff will consist of them. However, we will also hire a few teachers,” said Singh.
The proposal for the medical college is currently awaiting bureaucratic approvals following which construction will begin. Other than this, the DDU Hospital has also proposed a nine-storey Out Patient Department (OPD) block which has been awaiting sanction since five years.
