Day 18: No end to Delhiites' misery

Eighteen days after the announcement of the demonetisation by the Centre, queues were still witnessed outside ATMs and banks on Saturday. Students lined up at ATMs in North Delhi.

People lamented that in most places ATMs were running dry. "I have visited seven ATMs and all of them were dry. Anyhow I managed to withdraw money after two hours," said Mansi Saini, a student of IP University.

Navya Goyal, a 35-year-old woman, who stood in a queue at ICICI ATM of Mukherjee Nagar, said, "It has been 18 days of demonetisation but things have not improved.  I stood for 45 minutes in queue on Friday at an ATM but by the time my turn came, there was no cash left and I was disappointed."

Bijoy Khawarikkam, a tourist from Assam, said he had been standing in queues for the last two days but all his efforts were in vain. "I was scheduled to leave after today (Saturday), but since I had no cash, I could not book tickets or pay the hotel bill. Today, I am hoping to get cash."

A security guard deployed at the Punjab National Bank ATM at Azadpur said before demonetisation officials used to fill onsite ATM twice a day but now it is stocked after two or three days as there is no cash available with the replenishing agency.
