A 27-year-old constable was shot dead by three armed assailants near his home in outer Delhi’s Narela area on Friday night. The deceased, identified as constable Jeetendra Khatri posted at the Civil lines police station, was returning to his Narela home when the incident took place. The assailants are said to be known to the victim and had carried out the attack over a personal rivalry. Investigators also said that all three attackers have been identified and efforts are on to nab them. The police, however, did not reveal the identity of the suspects as it would have hampered investigation.

“We got a call around 10:15 pm about the incident. Khatri was shot in his abdomen. He was rushed to Raja Harishchandra Hospital from where his family took him to Fortis Hospital where he succumbed to injuries around 3 am on Saturday,” said a senior police official. His body was handed over to his family after postmortem examination.

“A case of murder has been registered and a manhunt has been launched to nab the attackers who are known to the victim. The exact reason of dispute, which led to the killing, will be known only after the accused are arrested and interrogated,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Vikramjit Singh. This is not an isolated incident where miscreants attacked the Delhi Police personnel. This is the second incident in January where police personnel were killed in the city. In 2014, three police personnel were shot dead by criminals in various incidents while 11 had lost their lives in various accidents including one in a train accident. In all, 25 police personnel died on duty last year.

On January 13, 2015, a 30-year-old Delhi Police constable Karamveer was shot dead Monday night by two liquor suppliers. Both accused have been arrested. Karamveer was patrolling near Jhangola village in west Delhi’s Alipur area with a Delhi Police home guard Surender Singh, 39, when he received information that some people in the area were trying to smuggle liquor.

On January 12, a Delhi police head constable was attacked in Seelampur by miscreants. Similarly, two Delhi Police constables were attacked by a group of men, who were confronted for allegedly drinking and gambling in a park in Uttam Nagar area of west Delhi on October 20, 2014. A constable who was patrolling along with traffic officials was pushed out of a moving car in Seemapuri area in northeast Delhi on October 18. A constable was gunned down in Vijay Vihar area of outer Delhi on October 13.
