A factory worker’s son posed as a senior MHA official, a CBI officer and a BHEl engineer at different times to dupe people crores of rupees on the pretext of providing jobs or contracts, has been arrested. According to police, Joy Shaw/ Mukesh, an engineering graduate, is from a Bengali family settled in Bhopal, where his father is working as a labourer in a bearing manufacturer factory. Apart from the car — registered in his name — police claimed to have also recovered several incriminating evidence such as a fake identity card issued in the name of the Ministry of Home Affairs, a fake voter-id and an Aadhar card, stamps and logos of CBI and other Government organisations. He has also been found in holding of a car with a red beacon light and 2 stickers of the “MHA with Ashok Emblem” displayed on the windshield along with several other incriminating documents including the letter head of Reliance and Essar which have now been recuperated by the Police.
According to police, accused Mukesh Shaw would trap his victims through sweet talks while taking them out on long drives in his Maruti Ciaz car bearing a red beacon and MHA stickers.
While Shaw had managed to evade arrest for long by using the fake identity proofs, he was finally nabbed by the Delhi Police’s Crime Branch team after he once happened to submit a copy of his original Aadhaar card at an East Delhi hotel he had invited one of his victims for a meeting, said Ravindra Yadav, Joint CP (Crime).
The Delhi Police were on Shaw’s trail ever since receiving a complaint from a city businessman who was duped of
Rs 85 lakh. The victim, Bharat Bhushan Gupta, has an iron scrap business and an office in Barakhamba Road.
“Gupta had been introduced to Shaw through a broker in May 2015. Shaw had posed as an assistant director with MHA in this case and even produced an identity card during their first meet that was held at Oberoi Hotel in Delhi," said Yadav.
Mukesh Shaw, who was known by his victims as Joy Shaw, allegedly promised to use his influence to help him bag contracts of various projects being floated by companies such as Reliance Industries, Essar power and the Indian Government.
Shaw also requested Gupta to visit his hometown in Bhubaneshwar where he took him around in his Ciaz car on a visit to some factories which he said could be allotted to him for his iron scrap business. The victim fell in his trap and ended up handing him Rs 85 lakh in return.
Soon after police began their probe, they realised that there was no MHA official by the name Joy Shaw. Meanwhile, the accused on learning that the victim had approached police, had gone into hiding.
In the lengthy investigation process, Crime Branch officers scanned the identity proofs submitted by him at the various hotels he had called his clients to.
While he had produced Aadhar card bearing the name Joy Shaw at most hotels, at the Ginger Hotel in Karkardooma he had submitted his real identity proof. That helped identify the real suspect and he was finally arrested from his rented accommodation in Bhopal on Wednesday.
