In what seems to be a huge debacle for the Delhi University, the BSc Physical Education Health and Sport Science (PEHES) course, running at Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Health and Sports Science (IGIPHSS) of the University has not been approved by the University Grant Commission (UGC). According to the sources, total 108 students have been enrolled in the current academic session in this course. The university is in the process of conducting enquiry into the matter.
The course BSc (PEHES) was the only undergraduate course in the field of Physical Education. But as per the 2014 gazette notification, the course was not mentioned; this implies that the course is no more available in universities across the country.
The matter came to light when it was sent to Committee of Course (COC) for the designing under the Choice Based Credit system (CBCS). The committee members have raised the point as per the UGC notification course does not exist.
“As per the University guidelines, COC members have to prepare the course structure according to the new CBCS. Though we prepared the syllabi but we raised the issue that till the UGC will not lift the course, how a college/institution can execute it,” said Sarita Tyagi, Assistant Professor, member, COC Delhi University.
COC is the apex body to design the course structure. The meeting was held in the month of April this year. Professors from Indore University, Aligarh University, Panjabi University were a part of this meeting.
“What is the relevance to design the course while UGC did not mention the course name in the list,” asked Deepak Mehta, Professor, Indore University. The institution should clarify to the students about the course, “Mehta added.
UGC released the name of courses which any Indian University can run in the last gazette notification on July5, 2014 by Government of India. However, the course B sc (PEHES) was not mentioned in the list.
Shockingly, this year; more than hundred students have taken the admissions under this course despite principal and college administration is well aware from the fact that UGC has not given the permission to run the course. While talking with the pioneer, a senior university official has given the assurance of the inquiry in this matter.
