The father and the son have had a strange coincidence. JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda had become the Prime Minister some 22 years ago after BJP stalwart Atal Bihari Vajpayee resigned just 13 days after being in power due to lack of numbers. Deve Gowda’s son HD Kumarswamy is now set to become the Karnataka Chief Minister after BS Yeddyurappa on Saturday failed to the cobble up the numbers for a majority and resigned.
His stepping down without facing the trust vote thus is a stark reminder of the over-two-decade-old developments. Vajpayee had then said, “I am going to tender my resignation to the President of India.” As for Yeddyurappa, failing to shore up numbers, he announced his resignation after delivering an emotional speech. “I’m not pressing this motion of confidence, and I will resign. I will directly go to Governor and submit my resignation as CM,” he said.
