Soon after Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday instructed Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi to ensure that all police stations and other complexes are cleaned within a week, saying that he may undertake surprise visits, Delhi Police has launched a cleanliness drive at every police station. Bassi asked his men to clean police stations and police complexes.
“I wanted to assure the people that our men will not only be more sensitised but they will also participate in the drive of cleaning the areas, including police stations and residential complexes,” said Bassi, while launching a cleanliness drive at Tilak Marg police station in Central Delhi. The Police Commissioner said that the Union Home Minister has been in “constant touch” with the force and “has instructed us to clean all other police stations like we cleaned the Mandir Marg police station October 2”. Delhi has nearly 180 police stations.
“The Home Minister has asked Delhi Police Commissioner to monitor cleanliness drive in police buildings and other premises and ensure they are kept tidy. He (Singh) may undertake a surprise visit at some chosen locations of the department after a week,” a senior Home Ministry official said.
The official said Singh has asked Commissioner Bassi to oversee that the aim of Swachchh Bharat mission is achieved by Delhi Police, which has a large public interface by virtue of its duties. “The Home Minister may undertake a surprise visit to any police station or other building after a week or so,” another tweet said.
“The Minister, in addition to saying that he will undertake surprise visits himself, also asked us to inform him of any problems we may face regarding cleanliness and said he will help resolve them,” Bassi said. The Police Commissioner also said this was the beginning and the drive will be conducted at every police station of Delhi. “The Prime Minister’s initiative is like an energy drink for us as we often conduct such drive at police complexes and police stations,” Bassi added. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2 launched the Swachchh Bharat Abhiyan, a nationwide cleanliness drive that seeks to clean up the country in five years. After launching the ambitious initiative, Modi had paid a surprise visit to the Mandir Marg PS in Central Delhi, on his way to Valmiki Colony to launch the campaign, to check how clean it was — and wielded a broom on finding its environs dirty.
