CHRIS EVANS talks about his character Captain America aka Steve, and his conflict with Iron Man in the movie Captain America: Civil War which is slated to release on May 6. Excerpts

How did you want your character of Steve aka Captain America to evolve in this filmIJ

I like that it’s the first time Steve doesn’t really know the answer. In the first Captain America, it’s pretty clear Nazis are bad. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it’s S.H.I.E.l.D. being run by Hydra. No conflict there. In the Avengers movies, aliens are no good. It’s always pretty cut and dry for him to know which side of the coin to fall on but this one is tricky as this conflict is a little more akin to a day-to-day struggle that we all go through where there are no clear lines between what is right and what is wrong. There’s just a point of view.

Who is on Captain America’s teamIJ

There’s an underlying plot going on with the Winter Soldier, which sets the majority of the Avengers on his tail and Cap is trying to intercept while this entire Sokovia Accords conflict is happening. So it’s a matter of who initially falls into allegiance with regards to how he handles the Winter Soldier and ultimately it branches out into the Sokovia Accords.

Tell us about Cap’s conflictIJ

Basically, certain Governments around the world are expecting the Avengers to take responsibility for the damage they have done in saving the world. Now certain branches of the Government aren’t comfortable with us operating as an independent unit anymore so they want us to sign the Sokovia Accords that will allow the UN to tell us when and where to go. Steve feels this is the wrong move and Tony feels this is the right one. That division begins the conflict.

Tell us about the conflict between Steve and Tony aka Iron ManIJ

Cap’s has always taken orders. He doesn’t question what the Government wants to do. Tony is someone who dances to the beat of his own drum, so you wouldn’t expect him to want to sign any type of accords or documents. But in this story, Steve’s going through a lack of trust for the Government. And Tony has a bit of a guilty conscience and wants to show allegiance to someone.

How would you explain Captain America’s loyalty to Winter SoldierIJ

Bucky aka Winter Soldier is Cap’s best friend. He’s his oldest friend in the world. I don’t think Steve is the kind of guy who grew up as Mr. Popular, so Bucky was the guy who has always been there. He’s always had his back and Steve’s a loyal guy. I’m sure there’s a certain sense of guilt based on what happened to Bucky but all their tragedies just brought them closer.

Was it fun to bring all these other characters into the filmIJ

It’s great. What Marvel is so good at doing is weaving this giant blanket together, so any time you get to be the bridge between worlds and universes it’s exciting. When I saw Ant Man, I was enjoying it and saying to myself, “Oh yeah, we’re going to have this guy.” You get to blend these universes and it’s a real treat.
