City sizzles as mercury crosses 45oC in W Delhi

Published on:

Delhiites almost baked under the scorching sun on Saturday as the Capital sizzled at 43.2 degree Celsius. Heat wave was worst in West Delhi as the mercury touched 45.2 degree Celsius there.

Saturday was recorded as the hottest day of the season so far. According to a senior official of Indian Metrological Department (IMD), the city is not going to get any respite from the heat in the near future as the temperature is likely to remain hovering around 43 degree Celcius in the following week. IMD also forcasted that there is no possibility of rain.

“West Delhi witnessed the maximum temperature in the city — about 45.2 degree Celsius," said Dr R K Jenamani, director-in-charge of meteorological office at IGI.

He further said that as West Delhi area comes directly in the path of hot winds from Haryana and Rajasthan, the temperature crossed 45 degree mark because of rising temperatures in Hisar (Haryana) and winds from the Northwest.

“The temperature is expected to remain the same because there are no thunderstorms, the wind is dry and there are no Western Disturbances (WD). Besides, the westerly winds are also likely to persist which may bring more dry winds,” said Dr RK Jenamani.

“There are no chances of a plunge in the temperature as no rain is expected soon. In June, the temperature is only expected to rise. Delhi will continue to remain dry and humid as there are no signs of downpour in the near future,” said an official from the IMD.

While the maximum temperature on Saturday remained at 43.2 degree Celsius, the minimum was 24.8 degree Celsius, one notch below the normal minimum temperature.

As far as the humidity was concerned, the minimum humidity recorded on Saturday was 20 per cent and the maximum humidity of the day was 67 per cent.

Delhiites have been reeling under the scorching sun since last week as the temperature has only been escalating nearly by a degree or more everyday. With last Sunday's maximum temperature being 36.1 degree Celsius, Monday’s temperature went up to 37.6 degree Celsius to Friday’s — up to 42.2 degree Celsius.
