With the poll campaign in Goa heating up and strangely, of a sudden, it is the Roman Catholic Church here and not as much the political parties, which is grabbing headlines. Put under the microscope for its alleged political role, especially influencing the doling out of election tickets, the Church, which is the spiritual and religious guide for Catholics, who account for more than a quarter of the State 1.5 million population, first denied the allegations, before one of its satellite organisations has now launched a blistering attack on the BJP Governments both in the Centre and in Goa. The advisory issued by the Council for Social Justice and Peace, a social wing of the Church and which is headed by a Catholic priest, has listed a litany of charges against both State and Centre Governments, critiquing local corruption as well as PM Narendra Modi’s “Digital India” push.
