Tucked away in the corner of Malcha Marg market in New Delhi, Schengen offers food enthusiasts a fine dining experience with a rich mix of authentic European fare and new world cuisine, says SHAlINI SAKSENA

located in the quiet neighbourhood in Malcha Marg in the Capital, Schengen Deli-bistro-pub takes you into another world. With its contemporary and urban touch, the place has a chic feel to it. The good part is that the music is not too loud giving the place an ambiance that makes dining here a unique experience. Chef Piyush Jain tells you that the bistro-pub has a mixed menu — selected dishes from Europe. “Schengen has plenty to offer for food enthusiasts who love to try out new things. Our location is such that it provides expats comfort food away from home,” chef Piyush tells you.

So one will find a paella, risotto, a goulash and yes classic fish and chips with tartar sauce.  While the soups on the menu sound exotic, it is recommended that you go for the mains. But if you are the kind who likes to watch the weight all the time and are health conscious, go for rocket, apple and walnut salad. Served with shavings of parmesan, the salad is crisp and the dressing light. The walnuts and the green apples add that extra bite making sure that it whet your appetite. However, if you are the kind who doesn’t like to experiment too much with the food, go for the caesar salad.

You may want to go easy as you order in order to enjoy the fare that the restaurant has to offer. While it is best to pass the starters, don’t forget to order cajun spiced chicken satay served with peri peri mayo. For those who love chillies this one is a must try. For the vegetarians go for aubergine bruschetta. For the main course try the stuffed grilled chicken with mashed potatoes and spring vegetables served with a choice of pepper or mushroom sauce or the lamb shanks. In both, the meat is tender and succulent and the mashed potatoes soft and fluffy. For those who still want to go with the classic try their wood fired wholewheat pizzas. You can request the chef to give you half and half giving you a choice from the four varieties that they have to offer.

You may want to wash down all this food with a drink; it is a pub after all. Try the raaz mataz or the melon cooler. For dessert, don’t miss out on the tiramisu.
