On the eve of Diwali, everybody wants to conduct puja on an auspicious time in an auspicious place. VASTUSHASTRI KHUSHDEEP BANSAl offers tips on how to bring fortune home this Diwali with the correct vastu measures

On the eve of Diwali, everybody wants to perform his/her work or puja in an auspicious time and place. For this, the scientific and logical techniques of Maha Vastu could be of great help in bringing more love, money, and happiness in your homes. On Diwali, we all worship lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. So, we should keep in mind the direction in which the puja should be performed, or the zone in which the idol of the goddess should be kept. Also which colours of light bulbs should be used for decoration and in which shapes a rangoli should be made.

The centre of the celebrations is the lakshmi puja. According to the modern concept of Vastu Shastra, which is today’s Maha Vastu, there are specific instructions regarding it. At home, it is done at an appropriate time in the evening. Of the 16 Maha Vastu zones, the puja must be held in the south-east vastu (Agni kon) zone. You should face towards the east or south-east. The best colours are red, green, orange, purple, cream and yellow. Try to ensure that all the decorations, lights and rangoli are in these colours. For rangoli, use purple, green, red, orange and pink colours only in the south or south-southeast vastu zones. The rangoli designs can be rounded, oval or triangular.

Check to see that there are no idols of gods or goddesses, family pictures and other important and beneficial items kept in the south-southwest vastu zone which is considered to be the zone of waste and expenditure. To increase family affections and bonds, keep all your family pictures (ancestors and living members) in the south-west zone. Remove all sharp objects from there. To increase gains (property and finances), hang a picture of a black-framed prosperous village scene on the west vastu wall.

Since ‘health is wealth’, ensure that all red, orange and pink coloured objects, old tins of paints, dustbins, brooms and items associated with cleaning are removed from the north-northeast vastu zone. Keep these in the south-southwest zone. The north-east vastu zone must be clean, free of clutter and mainly blue and white in colour, with pictures or statues of gods placed there. A branch of a money plant in a newly bought blue flower vase in the north vastu zone will attract new career opportunities.

A thorough research into about 12,000 case studies in Maha Vastu has revealed that all the Diwali gifts should be kept in the east vastu zone to improve social associations. For your office/showroom, the best time for puja is the morning. The recommended location for the puja is the west vastu zone. You must face towards the west. The best colours for any decoration here is white, golden yellow and yellow, and round and pentagonal shapes for rangoli. Place silver statues and coins of goddess lakshmi and lord Ganesha in the west vastu zone to further wealth and remove all obstacles. To prevent losses, keep the north-east zone clean at all times. Red flowers in the south-southeast vastu zone will promote the spirit of hard work amongst the staff. For growth and gains, keep green coloured files in the south-east zone. Blue coloured files are all right in the west zone. Finally, a pyramid in the north vastu zone will create new opportunities and better sales. This zone should be clear of red, pink and orange-coloured items.

If you have a factory, lakshmi puja can be performed in the factory in the afternoon. The directional location is the west vastu zone and you should face towards the west. To increase gains from the factory, hang a picture of Goddess lakshmi and lord Ganesha with ‘shubh’ and ‘labh’ written on it. For excellent quality of production, light a 15 watt red bulb in the South-southeast vastu zone. To enhance trade, remove the packaging material from the south-southwest vastu zone and keep it in the east-northeast vastu zone. To increase sale volumes and prompt sale of goods, place a statue of 12 red horses (16 x 5 x 5 inches) in the south vastu zone.

Basically, to realise the full production capacity, remove all iron scraps and all the defective goods from the east-southeast and north-east vastu zones. Wear and tear in machinery and unnecessary expenses will be reduced. For better support from the Government departments, suppliers and labour force, remove all blue-coloured items and water tanks from the south-southwest vastu zone and place these within the west-northwest vastu zones.

Shift all the cleaning materials and dustbins to the south-southwest vastu zone. For a fresh atmosphere and memorable entertainment, place fresh flowers in a green flower vase in the north zone. Decorate the house using rangoli and lights, but watch out for the colours used. White, green and yellow lights are recommended.

For rangoli and other decorations, follow the vastu injunctions for the different zones. lights directly affect your mind, awakening the dormant energies in each zone. It has been found in various Maha Vastu case studies that red and maroon colours/lights in the south west vastu zone will affect skills, relationships and finances negatively.

For a north vastu zone entrance, avoid triangular rangoli designs. These colours negatively affect prosperity. For a south vastu zone entrance, abstain from wavy shapes in the rangoli design. It could affect your security. The east vastu zone entrance needs an oval-shaped or triangular rangoli. It brings happiness, prosperity and enhances social associations. Empower the west vastu zone entrance using rounded or pentagonal-shaped rangoli. For more prosperity and happiness, just above the main door, hang a torana of blue flowers if it is in the north, red flowers if in the south, green flowers if in the east, and yellow flowers if in the west.

How the panchtattva or the basic five elements of nature (air, water, fire, earth and space) react with each other to form your inhabited built-up space and influence you, forms the basis of vastu science. The panchtattva theory and the energies of the 16 Maha Vastu zones together can give you a memorable Diwali. They can also impart a greatly happy and fulfilling life for you!
