BPF set to form Govt in Assam's Bodo Council

The ruling Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF) is all set to form the Government at the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) for the third consecutive term since its inception even as counting was on in some of the polling centres. While the final tally is yet to be declared, the BPF has got 19 seats so far, followed by Peoples’ Confederation for Democratic Rights (PCDR) — a conglomeration of several organisations, which have so far won 10 seats.

While the Congress, which is a ruling party in Assam capital Dispur since 2001, drew a blank in the council polls in Assam’s Bodoland, the BJP, which has fielded candidates in all the 40 seats under the council, could manage to open its account in the Council by winning one seat. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) could manage to win two seats, the election officials said.

“We are still receiving reports from some of the counting centres in remote areas,” said Assam Chief Electoral Officer HN Bora. The third election to the 40-seat Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) that runs administration in four districts of Assam — Kokrajhar, Baksa, Chirang and Udalguri were held on Wednesday and it recorded over 78 per cent peaceful turnout of voters.

Repolls had been ordered in the two polling booths because of anomalies in voting. In the last polls to the council in 2010, the BPF led by Hagrama Mohilary won 32 of the 40 seats in the Council. Congress, which had an alliance with the BPF in Dispur, could manage to win three seats. The BPF, the main Opposition in the BTC area, managed to win only one seat.
