Scores of BJP activists led by Delhi unit chief Vijay Goel on Saturday courted arrest while protesting against the hike in power tariff in front of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s residence.
The activists squatted in front of the CM’s home and demanded her resignation. They later courted arrest and were taken to Tughlaq Road police station from where they were released.
Addressing the protesters, Goel said the BJP is committed to raising the voice of the people against electricity tariff hike and to uproot the Sheila Dikshit Government.
The BJP leader further said that the public had no avenue for relief if the Government itself keeps “looting the people of Delhi”.
“I had advised members of Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission that since they have retired, it is beyond their capacity to control the power companies. They should thereby resign,” he said.
Goel expressed incredulity over the move to raise tariff “despite the Delhi Government being a 50 per cent share holder in the power companies”.
“After discussions with the chairman and members of DERC, I have realized that Delhi Government, DERC and power companies are hand-in-glove. Power tariff can be decreased by 30 per cent even today if Delhi Government wanted to,” he said, adding that when BJP comes to power, it will reduce power tariff by a third.
