Astroturf | Can astrology really predict love?

All life is about is how well we relate to the self, those around us, and the society at large. For, the world is so structured that it would not allow any scope for living in isolation. The reason: the world happens to be a unified organism, set into an interdependent framework, where no individual has a reality independent of the entirety.  Remember, no individual is capable enough to service even existential needs in one’s own right. But all put together make a self-sufficient world. That makes it incumbent upon us to complement and supplement each other’s efforts to together meet our existential concerns.

The irony, however, is that when looked at in real terms, life turns out to be paradoxical, comprising of seemingly opposites — ignorance and awareness,  man and woman with varying psyche, positive and negative polarities. But they have to coexist, as they make up for each other’s void and complement each other. And, it is through convergence of the corresponding opposites that even the life cycle is carried forward. Even in material terms, productivity calls for collective efforts. What makes the journey of life even more complicated is that every individual is born unique, each manifesting varying mind-traits. So, the world turns out to be natural breeding ground for conflict of ideas, attitudes, and interests.  That makes the world a very complex organism, with a state of unease prevailing at all levels of our existence.

In such an intriguing framework, more often than not, even man-woman personal relationship doesn’t turn out to be an easy alliance.  Yet, the two need to live in a supportive mode, caring for each other’s sensibilities and concerns, to together carry forward the journey of life with ease and comfort.  Our learned masters had taken note of this human vulnerability.  Accordingly, they devised ways and means for compatibility study of prospective partners, so that the most adaptable amongst them is found out.  Yet, an ideal relationship may not be possible.  But relatively a workable relationship could be sought after.

Astrology came handy as a diagnostic tool in this respect. For, it can read mental orientation of a being. In conventional mode of working, sign and nakshatra placement of Moon in the two charts serve as the primal marker.  Also, the placement of Mars, which is identified with fire energy in a being, is taken into account.  Based on this, point system of matching has been developed on 8 counts — love, compatibility, health, mentality, dominance, attributes, career growth, and destiny.

Experience, however, suggests that the conventional matching system often proves a failure. For, even after scoring highest match making points, marriages have not survived. Further study reveals that Moon alone does not cover up all aspects of human attitudes, which count the most in any relationship.  Nature of other energies operative in a being, marked with different planets, do also need to be taken into account. Then only a fair understanding of the overall personality trends of a being would be possible, which the traditional astrologers often tend to ignore.

A case in point is that of a young man with an inflated ego, coming as it may with fiery Mars in opposition to expansive Jupiter  The girl he liked was found inherently aggressive, impulsive, domineering, and with a swaggering ego, as would Mars conjunct Jupiter in lagna sign, both ill-disposed off to Moon and volatile Rahu imply.  She would be erratic as well, with the Sun placed adverse to Uranus. With such a mind-frame, clash of ego becomes most probable.  So, despite scoring a fairly high match making points, how can they enjoy a happy marital lifeIJ  Faced with this analysis, the young man questioned me: “She has a very pleasant demeanor. How come we will not get alongIJ” “If you don’t carry an element of doubt, what made you seek my guidanceIJ I countered. Be honest to yourself, and explore the prospect with an open mind.”

Unlike the west, where the prospective partners explore relationship for long, before they settle into marriage, the Indian psyche begins with marriage as the rallying point. So, with this frame of mind, when the two prospective partners get infatuated, there is an aspired destination to reach.  To meet your urges expeditiously, you negotiate carefully, consciously leaving your usual habit-trends on the sidelines.  Consciously, you avoid ruffling feathers with the other side.  But, once you settle down in marriage, the destination having been reached, you begin taking each other for granted.  Unmindfully then, your natural trends come into play.  By that time it becomes too late.
