Assam gangrape, murder: NCW asks cops to bring culprits to book

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has instructed the police in Assam to nab the culprits involved in the brutal gangrape and subsequent murder of a teenage girl in State’s Baithalangsho area about ten days back.

While interacting with newsmen in Guwahati, NCW member Sushma Sahu said on Saturday that the trial of the case should be conducted through fast-track court for quick delivery of justice. “I have spoken to the police in

concerned district and instructed them to bring all the culprits to the book immediately,” she said.

“The case should also be tried in fast-track court so that justice is delivered to the family of victims soon and I am going to write to the Chief Minister and State’s Director General of Police to take stern action against the culprits,” said Sahu.

Sahu came to Assam on Friday regarding the hearing of some cases from Assam, which were registered with the National Commission for Women.

The visit assumes significance as there have been widespread protests regarding the failure of the police to nab the culprits behind the alleged gangrape and subsequent murder of a teenage girl at Baithalangsho on May 10.

Although the police have arrested four of the accused involved in the crime, three others are still at large.

The NCW also slammed the role of the Assam State Commission for Women, which is yet to visit the family of the victim.

Hundreds of people also took out a protest rally on Saturday in Baithalangsho protesting against the failure of the police to arrest all the seven  culprits.

It may be mentioned here that a young girl was raped by seven youths and subsequently murdered and hanged her body from a tree in Baithalangsho. The girl was returning home late at night after attending a cultural programme with her boyfriend.

The criminals also beat up the girl’s boyfriend before committing the crime. From the statement of the boyfriend, the police have identified all the seven accused.
