Two infiltrators were killed as Army foiled an infiltration bid in Macchil sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district early on Saturday. This bid was foiled after more than a month’s time when last infiltration was repulsed with fatal casualties on militant side.

A Defence spokesman said that alert troops noticed the movement of infiltrators in the wee hours in Macchil sector, around 130 kilometres from here. The interception led to an encounter that resulted into death of two unidentified terrorists, believed to be Pakistani nationals.

He said weapons and warlike store were recovered from the encounter site. The combing operation continued in the area till last reports came in.

Sources said that eight infiltrators have been killed in the Macchil sector during past one and a half month. Three armed militants were killed along the line of Control (loC) in July after Army repulsed infiltration attempt in Nowgam, Handwara sector of Kupwara district.

In Gurez sector of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, five armed infiltrators were killed during counter infiltration operation in July.

The autumn months are crucial for infiltration and exit of militants before the mountain passes are blocked due to snowfall in winter.

The army heightens alert in the loC area during these months to minimize chances of ingress.
