Pro-quota agitators vandalised BJP office in North Gujarat town Mehsana on Saturday following funeral of a Patidar youth who died after getting injured in police firing.
According to sources a Mehsana based Patidar youth Mayur Patel was injured in police firing on August 26, a day after Maha Rally of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PASS) convener Hardik Patel and his arrest that triggered State-wide violence. On Friday evening 22-year-old Mayur died and his funeral was held on Saturday morning.
“Thousands of people, mostly from Patidar community attended the funeral. Some of them shouted slogans against the ruling BJP and when the funeral passed near local BJP office they started pelting stones at the office and broke window panes,” said police, adding that realising the anger of Patidar youth, BJP workers sitting inside immediately ran out of the office.
According to police following the stone pelting incident they have cordon the office to prevent further damage. Sources in Mehsana said that unofficial Bandh call was given by Patidar leaders after the death of Mayur and as result of it not only Mehsana but adjoining Visnagar too shops and other commercial establishments remained closed.
After the police firing on Mayur Patel, the local PAAS leaders had announced that they would not allow Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel and Minister of State for Home Rajani Patel to enter in Mehsana till the responsible policemen who fired on Patel and others would be punished. In that firing as many as four Patidar youth were injured.
