ABVP to take up 'safe haven' with university V-C

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) would be taking up the matter of “those who shielded” the five accused students inside the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus with Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar, following which they plan to “approach police”. Five of eight students resurfaced last Sunday night after nine days of arrest of JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar.

All the eight students from AISA, SFI and banned organisation DSU respectively have been charged with sedition and criminal conspiracy for organising an event on Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, where they allegedly shouted “anti-India” slogans.

“The two students  Umar Khalid and Anirban  have told police that they were shielded with the help of JNU teachers. We will approach the V-C on this and enquire further. If it is established that teachers have supported them, we will go to police also to take action against them,” JNUSU Joint Secretary and ABVP member Saurabh Sharma told The Pioneer.

Sharma said the case against students was a “grave one” as they indulged in sloganeering to “break the nation” thus anyone supporting them “deserves to be punished”.

lot of rumours had spread across the media and JNU campus mentioning about a police complaint against the JNU teachers but Sharma denied it. However, he said the ABVP has plans to first speak to the administration.

JNU Teachers’ Association president Ajay Patnaik said these were just rumours and no teachers had complained about being questioned over the whereabouts of the five students while they were underground.

The event “A cultural evening — The country without a post office” to commemorate Guru’s hanging on February 9 created a huge row involving the students community.
