Seven police officials, including two Sub-Inspectors, two Head Constables and three Constables, were suspended from South Delhi’s Neb Sarai Police Station after they were allegedly found involved in illicit liquor business in South Delhi.
The suspended officials have been identified as Sub Inspector Vijay Kasana, Sub Inspector Pankaj, Head Constable Vijender, Head Constable Vijay, Constable Sandeep, Mukesh and Mahesh. They have been sent to District lines.
This action was taken following the death of a 38-year-old man, identified as Vijendra. He was suffering from jaundice and had on Friday bought liquor from a shop near the MCD school. He later fell sick and was admitted to a hospital where his health worsened. locals claimed that his blood pressure rose and he expired. Even though the doctors did not reveal exact cause of his death, they suspect he died due to liquor consumption. He was last seen buying liquor from the shop which is run by a mother-son duo, identified as Swarna and Sonu. Police later raided their shop and recovered 1,271 quarters of illicit liquor and arrested them. On Saturday another raid was conducted at the shop of one identified as Sonia and 1,332 quarters of liquor was recovered form her possession.
The locals also claimed that the policemen knew about the racket for years but did not taken any action. The residents had on various occasions complained about this to the Station House Officer (SHO) at the police station, but all in vain. “Due to this shop, many fights have also taken place in our locality. It’s unsafe to even walk through the stretch as drunkards are always loafing around. The officials also get a share of the profit which is one of the reasons that they have not taken any action,” said a resident of the area.
