lakhs of commuters travelling on the Dilshad Garden to Rithala corridor will soon get respite from crowded trains as six-coach trains will be inducted on the corridor. The first six-coach train will be inducted from Sunday. With this, the corridor will have 25 four-coach trains and one six-coach train.
The Delhi Metro has already converted all its trains on Jahangirpuri to HUDA City Centre and Dwarka Sector 21 to Noida City Centre/Vaishali corridor into six-coach trains. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has planned to convert 10 of its trains on the corridor into six-coach trains out of a total of 29. These trains will carry approximately 600 commuters more than the four-coach trains and will boost the carrying capacity of the Red line significantly.
The average ridership of the corridor at present is 3.5 lakh and with the introduction of six-coach rakes, passengers will get respite from rush. The induction of the first six-coach train has been pressed into service before the scheduled date to cater to the crowd attending the ongoing India International Trade Fair (IITF) at Pragati Maidan.
“The induction of this six-coach train has been preponed to Sunday for facilitating passengers visiting the ongoing India International Trade Fair at Pragati Maidan. Thus, the corridor will have 19 trains of four coaches each and 10 trains of six coaches in the next few months. Once all such trains are inducted into service on this line, every alternate train on line 1 will be six coaches during peak hours,” said a spokesperson with DMRC.
The Delhi Metro introduced the first six-coach Metro rake into passenger services on December 23, 2010 on the Blue line and subsequently introduced six-coach rakes on the Yellow line from February 6, 2011.
