54 per cent turnout at Jangpura re-poll

Hundreds of residents of Jangpura re-voted on Saturday and this time the turnout was more than what one witnessed on December 4. The re-polling at the Sarai Kale Khan’s Booth No. 42 at MCD Primary School registered a turnout of 54 per cent compared to 48.8 per cent recorded on polling day.

According to election officials, 438 out of 813 exercised their franchise — while on polling day, the turnout was 397 only. Negligence on the part of the presiding officer of the booth led to re-polling in the area. It was found that the data of mock voting was not deleted from the electronic voting machine (EVM), which is mandatory before polling.

“The turnout during re-poll was 5 per cent higher than that recorded on December 4. There were no reports of any disturbance during re-polling. The re-poll was conducted since data in the EVM was not cleared. We will ensure action against the officer responsible,” said Vijay Dev, Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi. The constituency had witnessed about 61.94 per cent voting on Wednesday, with a total of 79,912 voters exercising their franchise. In a three-way contest, Congress’ Tarvinder Singh Marwah is pitched against AAP’s Maninder Singh Dhir and BJP’s Pankaj Jain.

In 2008, re-polling was held in nine polling stations, of which fresh voting was conducted at six polling stations in Malviya Nagar Assembly segment, two in Burari and one in Matiala.
