Believe it! Men may lactate too
Men may not be naturally wired to breast feed but in certain circumstances, they may secrete milk. Although male lactation seems to be common only in dayak fruit bats, it is observed in a few domesticated animals, including cats, goats and guinea pigs, and on rare occasions humans. In some male World War II prison camp survivors, who had suffered months of starvation, scientists found that after receiving adequate nutrition, their hormone producing glands rebounded far quicker than their livers, resulting in hormonal spikes that caused lactation. liver cirrhosis can also cause lactation by disrupting the organ's normal, hormone metabolising function, according to a live Science report.
Yoga might not help cure asthma
A new study suggests that meditation and yoga can be of little help in improving asthma. According to the researchers, yoga can be advised as an alternative to breathing exercises for patients suffering from asthma. Asthma is defined as a common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that makes breathing difficult. Researchers of the report examined 14 previously published studies to determine the effectiveness of yoga in treating asthma.
Sleeping with lights on makes you fat
Obesity is fast spreading and people in developed and underdeveloped countries are increasingly falling prey to it. Though obesity has been attributed to eating habits and lifestyle, a new study has revealed that women who sleep with lights on have a greater risk of gaining weight. Researchers at the Institute of Cancer Research in london conducted a survey on 113,000 women. Study author, Professor Anthony Swerdlow, said: “In this large group of people, there is an association between reported light exposure at night and obesity. But there is no sufficient evidence to know if making your room darker would make any difference to weight. There might be other explanations for the association, but the findings are intriguing enough to warrant further scientific investigation.”
