Good concept but lacks thrill

Rating: 3/5

Thieves in Time finds the Sly and his support team travelling through time to stop a plot to eradicate the Cooper bloodline. Sly has to travel to Japan, medieval Britain, the wild west, the middle east and pre-historic times to stop various villains from stealing the canes of Sly’s ancestors and altering history.

The gameplay follows an open world exploration model introduced in the latter Sly games with little variation. During the platforming levels is the same as in past titles, though playing as Sly’s ancestors means the player gets to use new abilities, such as climbing walls, shooting guns or leaping further.

The PlayStation 3 and Vita versions of the game are identical contentwise though the graphics in the Vita game have been scaled down. The cross-save feature is a standout addition, allowing players to import their save game between both versions of the game.

From the graphics and gameplay to the voice acting and humour, this game through and through is fun and adventure at the same time. While playing the game you would not notice that it was done by a different studio, let alone the fact that eight years have passed since the previous game came out on PlayStation 2. So kudos to the makers of this game for coming out with something fresh and entertaining at the same time. A very well thought out gameplay and some great techniques introduced in the later parts makers for exciting gameplay. One could have done something with the storyline though. A little staid and less in the thrill quotient, especially the fight scenes. Other than that quite a nice one time try.
