In a bid to ensure the foolproof security to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi, teams of Special Protection Group (SPG), Border Security Force (BSF), Anti-Bomb Squads, paramilitary forces with the Delhi Police were deployed in and around the Patiala House Courts on Saturday.
However, no traffic diversion plan was made by the Delhi Traffic Police that seemed to have created a chaos for commuters plying on the roads during the hearing of a petition filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy against the Gandhis about “cheating” in the acquisition of Associated Journals ltd. (AJl) by Young India ltd (YIl) — “a firm in which Sonia and Rahul Gandhi each owned a 38 per cent stake.”
“Around 1,500 security personnel were deployed in and around the area to maintain the security of the political leaders and no major problem emerged during our security operations,” said a senior police official. Similarly, one fire tender and around 20 PCR vans were deployed on the spot to counter any untoward incident. According to police sources, the security was tightened from 6 pm on Friday evening and security officials were put on rotational shifts.
While around 250 traffic personals were present in and around the court, BSF personnel, including RAF officers, were deployed on the spot. On Friday evening, SPG officials had met district judge of Patiala House Courts to discuss the security arrangement and thereafter 16 more CCTV cameras were put up to track the actions and movements of the people around the primises, said a senior police official.
