At least 11 persons were killed and 16 others injured after a truck overturned on Tasgaon-Katemahankal road near Sangli district in western Maharashtra in the early hours of Saturday.

More than 25 labourers from Karnataka were travelling to Karad for work by the truck when its driver lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the truck turning turtle.

Reports that since truck was already over-loaded, the drivers had refused to give a lift to the workers, who had requested the driver for a ride as the state-run MSRTC buses were off the roads because of an ongoing strike. However, the truck drivers later agreed to take the workers along with him.

Eleven persons, mostly labourers, were killed on the spot. Of the injured, 11 were rushed to a hospital at Miraj, while five others were taken to a nearby rural hospital. The condition of the four injured persons was reported to be  ‘serious’.
