At least ten people were injured after a passenger train got derailed in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Saturday morning.

“The Alipurduar-Guwahati Sifung passenger train derailed on Saturday over a bridge between Salakati and Basugaon station in the Kokrajhar district around 05.15 am. Five coaches got derailed and the engine capsized as a result of the derailment,” said Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Chief Public Relation Officer PJ Sharma said while adding that there is, however, no causality reported in the incident. He also said that efforts are on to restore movement of trains through the tracks.

Another senior official of the NFR said the engine hit a tree which was lying on the tracks over a bridge on Champawati river. “Preliminary investigation reveals that strong wind on Friday night uprooted the tree and sent it flying on the tracks,” he said. “Accident relief train immediately rushed to the site with all equipment and medical help. The injured also includes the driver and the assistant driver,” he said. Ten local trains have been cancelled and several other trains were delayed due to the incident.
