KIRTI KULHARI, who plays a lesbian in Human, turned a producer with Nayeka. The actor speaks with SHALINI SAKSENA about her upcoming ventures among other things
What made you turn to production?
It was not a very thought about action. This was something that happended mechanically. It came to me organically. The way things have been for me professionally for the last one-and-a-half years, it gave me the confidence. I always wanted to do do more and nit just as an actor. I want to be at the centre of things and tell stories that I really want. I want to collaborate with the people that I want to work with. By bringing them on the same platform, it was my way of movin in this direction.
What is Nayeka about?
I was motivated to make this film. I wanted to add some hidden elements and see if the chanracter manages to get through all that. Things change for her. Over all, I would say that it is quirky, fun and dark. The character of Dr Saira Sabharwal is something that people have not seen me do before. It is a project that I was very excited about.
How is production different from being an actor?
There is a clear distinction. Being an actor, is only aspcect — you come on board, do your job and go home. As a producer you are responsible for putting the project together, putting the film together and bringing all the people on board from various fields and departments. You are the one who takes the final call on everything. It is your baby. Being a producer has opened my eyes to so many things. There are so many nitty-gritties involves. Everybody’s problem is your problem. Being a producer is a different ball game.
You play a lesbian. What were the challenges that came up?
Playing this role was an important part of who Saira. This is because this defines her in a lot of ways. To do justice to the character I spoke with many homosexual and bisexuals. I spoke with people from LGBTQ community — general conversation — about their lives, how tough or easy it’s been when they came out of the closet. I also spoke to a psychiatrist who deal with such ossues. I always like to do a thorough research about my role. I know that it is acting, but I like to perfect my craft. I also feel that this is my way of representing this community. I hope that people will take it in the right spirit and respond accordingly.
Do you think that the audience is up for this kind of genre?
The audience is up for this kind of genre. The viewers have grown and matured in the last few years. They are exposed to a lot of international work and that makes them understand more and open to different subjects. It is a well-told story and they will like this show.
What next?
I have Season 2 of Four More Shots. Then there is nayeka that is slated to release.
