Six wickets tumbled for 54 runs to irresistible fast swing bowling Saturday by Jerome Taylor for West Indies and Jimmy Anderson for England by lunch on the second day of the third cricket test. Resuming on 240-7, England was quickly dismissed for 257 in its first innings before West Indies lost early wickets to go to lunch at 37-3 in reply at Kensington Oval.
With three wickets in 3.3 overs for just three runs, Taylor swept aside England’s last three batsmen. Anderson, England’s leading test wicket taker, responded by claiming openers Kraigg Brathwaite with his second ball and newcomer Shai Hope for 5 with his 15th — both to slip catches. Anderson then deceived Marlon Samuels into offering no shot to a late inswinger with the last ball of his fourth over.
England leads the three-match series 1-0 after winning the second test by nine wickets. Taylor dismissed Chris Jordan to a leg-side catch by captain Denesh Ramdin for 3, then uprooted Stuart Broad’s middle stump for 10 and Anderson’s off-stump in successive deliveries.
His final figures were 3-36 off 18.3 overs. Swerving the ball both ways, Anderson troubled the West Indies batsmen from the start. His dismissal of Samuels, who scored a century in the second test, was a classic set-up. Samuels played and missed one outswinger and then let two more go through to England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler. He wasn’t prepared for the inswinger that followed, needlessly reviewing umpire Bruce Oxenford’s clearcut decision.
