On Thursday, David Warner led the charge against his former team, Sunrisers Hyderabad, scoring a 58-ball unbeaten 92 to help Delhi Capitals defeat SRH by 21 runs in Match 50 of the ongoing IPL 2022 season.
Playing against the side that he was part of in the last eight seasons of the cash-rich league, Warner remained unbeaten throughout the innings to help DC bounce back from a poor start and put up a fighting total at Brabourne's wicket.
And then the bowling attack led by Khaleel Ahmed (4-0-30-3) survived Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram's scare to help DC register the fifth win of this year's tournament.
With the win over SRH, Delhi have replaced the 2016 winners in fifth position in the league table.
The Sunrisers were off to a poor start in the 208-run chase and lost in-form opening batter Abhishek Sharma (7) in the second over itself. Kane Williamson (4) and Rahul Tripathi (22) also couldn't do much on the night and were back in the dugout by the end of the seventh over.
But when it started to look like it would be a cake-walk for Delhi, South African batter Aiden Markram (25-ball 42) joined hands with newly-appointed West Indies limited-overs skipper Nicholas Pooran (62 from 33 balls) to stage a stunning comeback. The duo added 60 runs for the fourth wicket. Markram was unlucky to miss his fourth fifty of the ongoing season. But Pooran reached his second back-to-back fifty in 29 balls. However he failed to take his side past the finish line and was sent back to the pavilion by Shardul Thakur (2/44).
Earlier, batting first, former SRH skipper David Warner remained unbeaten on 92 from 58 balls to help his side reach a total of 207 for three. Warner, who led SRH to a title triumph in the 2016 edition of the cash-rich league, was sacked as captain last year after he was struggling to score runs in the tournament.
The left-handed Australian batter was even dropped from the eleven in the last few matches and was not retained by the franchise, despite being the best-ever player in the team's history.
Playing against his former side, Warner was in full flow from the start and joined hands with West Indies power-hitter Rovman Powell to add an unbeaten 122 runs for the fourth wicket.
