Want to focus on schools, colleges: Goel

Sports Minister Vijay Goel on Friday said the priority will be on bringing up emerging talents from schools and colleges — a trend which he feels has been stopped of late.

In order to revive that culture, Goel said his department has identified ten universities which they will turn into sports hubs. "We have decided to identify ten universities that we will turn into sports hubs. We want to focus on schools and colleges. The trend of players emerging from schools and colleges has stopped. We want to revive that culture," said Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports.

He assured that athletes will be selected only based on merits.  "I can assure you that not a single athlete gets qualified for reasons other than merit. I can assure you that if an athlete is genuinely among the best, there would be no lack of funding for them," he said.
