Jesús de Miguel Alameda, the 30-year-old forward of Spanish second-division club CD Tenerife, died in the early hours of Tuesday, a day after he suffered a cardiac arrest following a collision with an opposing goalkeeper, the club announced.
"Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, we communicate the tragic passing, this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 a.m., of Jesús de Miguel Alameda," Tenerife said in a statement. "There are no words of comfort." The club said his family had asked for maximum respect for their privacy.
The collision occurred in stoppage time of Monday's league match against FC Andorra at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium in Santa Cruz, with the score at 2-2. De Miguel challenged for a long ball and was struck in the chest by the knee of Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono, who had rushed out of his area. Owono was sent off. The match was abandoned.
De Miguel collapsed on the pitch and was treated there before being taken by ambulance to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. According to local media reports, he suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated by medical staff before being admitted to intensive care. Tenerife said on Monday evening that he was "stable, despite the severity of his condition", and in an update early on Tuesday said his condition had "worsened neurologically".
The club's announcement was followed by tributes from across Spanish football, including Barcelona, Real Madrid and the national federation. Andorra had earlier expressed support for the player and his family.
De Miguel had been with Tenerife since 2024 and was a regular in the side this season. The club has not announced funeral or tribute arrangements.
