Tottenham stunned the reigning champions on Sunday as Heung-min Son’s second half goal was enough to beat Manchester City.

Jack Grealish was making his first start for City and was immediately involved in the action as his darting run resulted in a foul on the edge of the area. Ilkay Gundogan though, fired over the resulting free kick.

Pep Guardiola’s side were exceptional in the opening exchanged and really could have scored three goals inside the first 10 minutes.

City had an almost total monopoly on the ball but Spurs did threaten on a couple of occasions with rapid counter-attacks.

Into the second half and it wasn’t long before the home side bagged the opening goal of the game.

Heung-min Son breezed down the right-hand side, cut in, and fired a long range effort past Ederson.

Spurs really should have been 2-0 up soon after but Steven Bergwijn blasted a good chance wide of the post.

The visitors pushed forward for an equaliser late on as Kevin de Bruyne stung the hands of Hugo Lloris with a few efforts.

But Tottenham held on for a special win on Nuno’s debut.

Earlier in the first game on Sunday, West Ham United twice came from behind to get their Premier League campaign off to the ideal start by beating Newcastle in a hugely entertaining match at St James' Park.

The Hammers trailed 2-1 at half time but staged a remarkable fightback in the second half with goals from Said Benrahma, Tomas Soucek and Michail Antonio.

Callum Wilson put Newcastle ahead after just five minutes, heading home Saint-Maximin’s cross to delight the 50,000 vocal fans.
