Powar is Ind A new bowling coach
Mumbai: Former off-spinner and women's team coach Ramesh Powar has been named India A bowling coach for the upcoming series against South Africa A. "He has been appointed only for the South Africa A series," a BCCI official said on Tuesday. Powar, who played two Tests and 31 ODIs for India, was embroiled in a controversy late last year after he fell out with senior women's team player Mithali Raj when he was the head coach. India A will be playing two four day games and a five match unofficial 'ODI' series against South Africa A. The one-day series will be played in Thiruvananthapuram beginning from Thursday.
Murray secures 1st singles win
Madrid: Three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray cruised to an important win on Monday, not at the US Open but at a second-tier Challenger Event against a teenager with just $150 in career earnings. Double Olympic champion Murray ($61 million in earnings), shunned the New York spotlights as he chased his first singles win since hip surgery in January. And the move paid off as he swept past French 17-year-old Imran Sibille 6-0, 6-1 who only squeezed into the draw as an alternate on his professional debut. Murray, whose ATP ranking has slipped to 328, next faces world number 115 Norbert Gombos of Slovakia in the second round on Tuesday.
Hyderabad FC replaces Pune City
New Delhi: The sixth Indian Super League will have a new team with Hyderabad FC, a city with a storied past in football, replacing FC Pune City, a club that has been plagued by financial problems in recent years. Vijay Madduri and Varun Tripuraneni are the owners of the new team, which will play its match at the Gachibowli Stadium. An official word on the home venue is still awaited. Pune City struggled to pay salaries to players and support staff during the fifth edition of the Indian Super League. "Hyderabad, a city that boasts of a strong football culture, will soon see its own team making its debut in the upcoming Hero Indian Super League season," the ISL said in a release. It is understood that the Wadhawan Group, owners of Pune City, are winding up the team due to financial issues.
