Silva sets pace for Sri lanka

Opener Kaushal Silva was nearing a second test century as Sri lanka finished day two of the opening test against Pakistan on 178-3 at the Galle International Stadium on Thursday.

Play ended 15 minutes before schedule with eight overs still remaining due to bad light, with Silva unbeaten on 80 and captain Angelo Mathews on 10.

The test has been severely affected by bad weather with the entire first day's play washed out by rain and toss delayed by 90 minutes on day two. Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq opted to bowl first hoping the wicket that had been under cover for two days will help his seam bowlers.

The bowlers created enough opportunities, but sloppy fielding saw several of them slip away from Pakistan.

Opener Dimuth Karunaratne was caught off a no ball by Wahab Riaz with the total on two, and when Kauhal Silva had reached six he was dropped by Yasir Shah also off the bowling of Wahab.

The left-arm seamer swapped ends and dismissed Karunaratne off the second ball of his new spell. The batsman bottom edged an attempted pull shot to the wicketkeeper.

Sangakkara added 112 runs with Silva for the second wicket and had lot of luck. He dived and survived a run out attempt after Silva pushed one to square leg where Wahab was fielding and called for a risky single. Eight balls later Sangakkara turned a Shah delivery straight into the hands of short leg, but Azhar Ali failed to hold onto the chance. Sangakkara completed his 52nd half-century with some neat hits and soon after was dismissed by Wahab when he edged one straight to Younis Khan at first slip.

Brief Scores

Sl: 178/3 (Silva 80*, Sangakkara 50; Riaz 2/51, Mohammad Hafeez 1/24) vs Pakistan.
