SC defers hearing on BCCI's review plea

The Supreme Court on Tuesday decided to wait for two weeks before passing an order on the review petition filed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) challenging the radical reforms proposed by the Court in its judgment of July 18, 2016. The judgment came as a result of crucial recommendations made by Justice RM lodha Committee, which proposed far-reaching administrative and structural reforms.

The bench of Chief Justice TS Thakur and Justice SA Bobde took up a bunch of review petitions filed by BCCI, former cricketer Chandu Borde and former BCCI official Niranjan Shah inside chambers and decided to defer its decision by two weeks.

Sources in the BCCI said no formal order has been passed on the review petitions yet. On Monday, the apex court had reserved orders on an application filed by Justice lodha panel suggesting that the top brass of BCCI be replaced in order to facilitate smooth rollout of reforms by an independent panel of Court-appointed administrators. Till such time this order is out, it is possible that the Court may have put on hold its decision on the review appeals.

The Board, in its review plea, sought an open court hearing to explain how the lodha panel recommendations cannot be implemented. It further objected to the judgment being an interference into the private society's autonomy and questioned the constitution of Justice lodha panel to regulate affairs of the apex cricket body.
