Pressure mounts on FIFA ahead of vote

FIFA’s leadership meets on Monday to decide the date of a vote to replace president Sepp Blatter as a corruption storm inflicts ever worsening damage on world football.

The 79-year-old Swiss, the most powerful figure in sport by many counts, is to announce a date for a new election after Monday’s executive committee meeting. The vote will be held in Zurich sometime between December this year and February 2016.

FIFA also faces mounting pressure to quickly start reforms and Blatter is also expected to announce what measures could be proposed to the special election.

Sponsors Coca Cola and McDonald’s, have called for radical changes in the way the world body is run after many years of scandal and doubts on the way the 2018 and 2022 WC were awarded to Russia and Qatar respectively.

Webb pleads not guilty

New York: Jeffery Webb  former high-ranking official in FIFA appeared before a judge on Saturday, entering a not guilty plea in a massive racketeering and bribery case that rocked international football.

Webb posted a $10 million bond at his arraignment in federal court. He surrendered three passports — two from the UK and one from the Cayman Islands — and will be required to wear an electronic monitoring device. Webb’s bond was secured by 10 people including his wife and her parents. They posted real estate, retirement accounts, automobiles and jewelry as part of the bond. He didn’t speak except to say “Yes, your honor” when the judge asked if he understood the charges.
