South Africa's opening batsman Dean Elgar who proved his worth with the ball on day 1 of the first Test against India in Mohali commented later that the pitch is not ideal for good cricket but aimed at eking out a result.
"I don't think it's a very good cricket wicket but it's a result wicket which is expected when you come here. Kudos to India though because this is the kind of wicket they will prepare against us. We knew coming here it would be different to what we're used to. It can still go either way," he said after picking up four wickets.
For someone who had picked 6 wickets in previous 17 Tests in 69 overs, he picked three in just 17 balls on Thursday. This left him surprised as well. "I'm surprised with the outcome. I didn't expect to take four wickets which is quite nice. I've always had that ability to bowl I'm not just a batter maybe now people know. It was nice to contribute and it is a wicket that is assisting the spinners a little bit. It was nice to put the Indian players on the backfoot."
