Olympic champion Carolina Marin on Wednesday described the new service rule introduced by BWF as stupid. This rule, which will come into effect from March 2018, requires the whole of the shuttle to be below 1.15 meters from the surface of the court at the point of being hit.
"I think the problem with this new rule is that it will cause problems to the doubles players, not so much to the singles players. let's see how it works but I think it is something a bit stupid. It will definitely affect people who are very tall but mainly for the doubles players," Marin told media persons here.
The Spanish player has had a mixed season in 2017. After starting the year well, she suffered injuries and seemed to fall behind other names like Tai Tzu Ying, PV Sindhu, Nozomi Okuhara and Akane Yamaguchi in having success at big events.
But the 24-year old is ready to leave 2017 behind and is looking at prospects for next year. "Though I am not disappointed with everything that happened in 2017, I have to accept that it wasn't my best year. I had to also recover from an injury and it was tough for me because I have to take care of my body too. "But this year is done and I am looking forward to the next year. There would be new challenges and I want to win some big tournaments," the former world champion said on the sidelines of the press conference to launch 3rd edition of PBl.
She also expressed her opinion about why no one player in women’s badminton is emerging as undisputed No 1. "I think, presently, it's impossible to be a top player consistently. When you are at the top, you are expected to be at all of the tournaments and that is difficult," Marin concluded.
