'JBC is great opportunity for aspiring children'

Former badminton Asian champion Dinesh Khanna believes PNB Metlife Junior Badminton Championship (JBC) is a great opportunity for children, particularly underprivileged kids.

Season two of the JBC kick started at Thyagaraj sports complex here on Monday. Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Khanna said this initiative will give everyone an opportunity to show their ability in the sport.

"For young children two things are important — opportunity to play and some financial support, particularly for underprivileged kids. So that when they have the talent, we are not leaving them out," he said. "It is an expensive game so financial support is definitely required to make it big. So JBC is a great initiative."

The matches will be held in five categories — under-9, under-11, under-13, under-15 and under-17 — for both boys and girls.

From each city four kids in each category will be selected and they will qualify for the grand finale.

From them, 10 in total will receive scholarship. Besides, 16 underprivileged kids will also receive scholarship. All the 26 players will get an opportunity to train in a reputed badminton academy.
