Ireland are no pushovers

Published on:

It is a match against a team that earned a slot to play in the World Cup by virtue of performances that made the cricket world take notice of Ireland. It means India have to take the field with their resolve to win as intense as in the previous matches.  Ireland have distinguished themselves at this Cup and have to be given respect. Ireland may not be formidable on paper but they are no pushovers either and we saw that during their close win over Zimbabwe.

Bowling has been a weak area for Ireland but their batting is a plus point. The century by Ed Joyce against Zimbabwe was so professionally constructed. Andy Balbirnie was unfortunate to miss his century in the same match. William Porterfield is an experienced batsman at the top. Ireland have some competent players who can give India anxious moments. That is the reason why I fear complacency can hurt India.

India have looked good but there have been some issues concerning batting. I want to see Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan to show more consistency. They are as crucial as Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane and must tighten their game ahead of the knockout stage. Of course, I have no doubts that they will play to their potential when it matters.

The one department that needs immediate attention is the fielding. After performing so well in the initial phase I was shocked to see India’s sloppy fielding against the West Indies. Things can’t change overnight but then the basics are learnt over the years. You can’t forget the basics and expect to excel.

India must not relax at all. This mental toughness will carry the team through to the title and it is important that Mahendra Singh Dhoni keeps the players on their toes. They have to be at their best all the time because when you play a weaker team the onus falls on the stronger combination.

India’s last two league matches are in New Zealand and it is not rocket science to know that the conditions are going to be different. They are going to matter because the wickets are different. There may not be the same kind of bounce and pace as in Australia but then the ball is bound to seam and swing more. The moving ball is far more dangerous than the one that bounces. The Ireland batsmen can tackle swing because of their experience in playing in English counties and it is here that the Indian spinners will play a big role.

Dhoni has no compulsion to change the playing XI. Mohammad Shami continues to bowl well and his rhythm has impressed me most. There is no need to break his rhythm by giving him rest unless there is a minor injury that needs to be addressed. Retaining a winning combination helps the team keep their focus and I know the Indians are on the right path. They can take on Ireland with the confidence that has marked the team’s progress.
