India keen to break jinx

India keen to break jinx

Senior Indian pacer Ashish Nehra's farewell at his home ground might take the spotlight away from a fixture which has proven really tough for India in the past.

Despite all the attention will be on the 38-year-old's last and final cricket match on Wednesday, one cannot look beyond the hosts' miserable streak against the Kiwis.

Having playing Wednesday's opponents on five occasions so far in the shorter format, the Men in Blue have surprisingly never beaten them even once, with the latest being the embarrassing 47-run loss against the visitors during last year's World T20 after being bowled out for 79 while chasing a modest 127-run target.

The previous defeat at home came in September, 2012, when Kiwis defeated India by a meagre one-run in Chennai.

However, times have changed since and the Men in Blue are a totally different side from the one New Zealand would have faced in 2012.

India are on a roll after comfortable series victories against England, Australia, Sri lanka and not to mention New Zealand in the limited overs format recently at home.

Kohli's blue army has created an air of invincibility around them in the last few years. At home, particularly, India have been a tough nut to crack for any visiting team.

So Virat would be hoping to break their duck against Kane Williamson's troops on Wednesday at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium.

Indian batsmen have been firing on all cylinders of late. Skipper Kohli leads the team with his consistent contribution with the bat. His century in the final ODI against New Zealand took him to 9000 runs and he will hope to carry on that form into the shortest format as well.

Fellow centurion in the last ODI, Rohit Sharma, is also on fire and has the ability to clear the ropes against any bowler on a given day.

His partner Shikhar Dhawan is enjoying the form of his life lately and he can be as lethal as anyone on a specific day.

Besides them, the likes of Manish Pandey, Dinesh Karthik and Mahendra Singh Dhoni will look to contribute with runs.

Karthik in particular had a good ODI series against the Kiwis and will look to cement his place in the Indian squad for the coming years.

It will be interesting to see if the uncapped Shreyas Iyer will be in the playing eleven.

After a string of impressive performances in the domestic level and the cash-rich Indian Premier league, Iyer was selected for the T20 series.

His match-winning century against South Africa A in the Final of the tri-series recently will give the 22-year-old a lot of confidence ahead of the 3-match T20 series.

Hardik Pandya's emergence of late in particular has been a big positive for Indian cricket. His ability to bat and bowl has helped skipper Kohli play with an extra bowler.

Known for his explosive ability, Hardik is ideally suited for the T20 format.

Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have been irreplaceable in the limited-overs format and they will be difficult for any team to deal with. Both have been very efficient with the new ball as well in the death overs.

Jasprit's death bowling proved crucial for India in getting the narrow 6-run victory against Kiwis on Sunday.

Chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav has been a revelation in the last year and batsmen all over the world have struggled to pick him up.

On Tuesday in the net session, Kuldeep Yadav was seen practicing with wet balls to tackle the dew factor.

With the bowling coach Barat Arun overseeing it, Kuldeep was regularly soaking the white ball in mineral water regularly to get a proper grip.

His partner, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal will be high on confidence after picking up two-wickets in the last ODI.

However, all the attention will be on Nehra's farewell. He will be looking to bring his 18-year-old international career to an appropriate end in the place where it all began.

The 38-year-old has picked up 44 wickets in 17 Test matches, 157 wickets in 120 ODIs and also has scalped 34 times in 26 T20Is.

However, he has to be at his absolute best against an in-form New Zealand batting line-up.

The likes of Williamson, Colin Munro and Tom latham have been scoring well of late and add Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor to it, New Zealand have a very strong batting unit.

The likes of Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee and Trent Boult will also not be an easy job for the Indian batsmen to tackle on Wednesday.
