I can be world champion by next year: Vijender

Vijender Singh is in bouyant mood and after his two wins in Pro-Boxing, he feels he can become a world champion by the eighth fight which could be next year or by 2017.

“Next year possibly (I can become a champion) after I've competed in eight bouts. So if not next year then the year after,” he said in the capital on Saturday.

Vijender is back home in India after winning his two fights in Manchester and Dublin both by a considerable margin.

In the Manchester bout, he beat Sonny Whiting by a technical knockout and had an even easier showing in the next one against Dean Gillen.

Both Whiting and Gillen are newcomers to the sport themselves which made for a comfortable choice for new entrant Vijender.

“For me, everything was new. Pro boxing was new and everything around it too. The concept of face-off was new, press conferences before a fight was new and all that happens in the ring and before a fight was new for me. I think it also comes down to the promoters. We discuss how to go about things and who to face next,” he said.

Asked if there is a vetting process to select an opponent, he said that they look at videos first and then it is up to the promoters to iron out the details.

“You have that option to have a look at two or three boxers and then decide who you want to face. Then the promoters talk and negotiate for a fight. It may happen that the opponent thinks he can beat me and I think the same.”

With two fights done in the United Kingdom, the next one or the one after could be in Delhi.

“It is definite that it will happen. It could be the fourth fight or the fifth or sixth — but it will happen. I will participate in India for sure. I will tell the promoters about the bout and give ideas. We need investors though to ensure there is a big show otherwise there is no point.”

He’s in India for Diwali and attended the ISl game in the evening between Delhi Dynamos and Atletico de Kolkata.

With Olympics knocking on the door, he reckons India will come back with a medal but he refused to mention any names for the final winner.

“Shiva Thappa, Vikas Krishan Yadav are doing really well. We'll get a medal from Rio for sure. I can't predict who,” he finished.
