I am shattered: Dutee

The Odisha Government on Friday said it will take up with the Centre the case of athlete Dutee Chand being dropped from the upcoming Commonwealth Games on the ground of high androgen level.

“I am completely shattered over the development. I am an athlete and wanted to bring glory to my country. All my efforts have gone astray,” the 18-year-old girl told reporters on her return to the state.

The sprinter appealed to the state government to take steps so that she could overcome the androgen level and resume her career. Dutee met state sports minister Sudam Marandi on her return. Dutee was brought back to the state by the sports department after it came to a conclusion that she would not be able to participate in the Commonwealth Games.

“The state government will seek report from the Athletic Federation of India (AFI) and SAI in regards to Dutee and take required steps,” Marandi told reporters.

With Dutee’s career hitting hurdles, sports secretary Saswat Mishra said the state government would do its best to bring back the sprinter on track.

Want to live up to Sreejesh’s expectation: Sardar

Glasgow: India captain Sardar Singh is banking on his deputy P R Sreejesh to replicate his stellar World Cup performance in the upcoming Commonwealth Games and said they are determined to stand up to the expectations of the lanky goalkeeper in the quadrennial event.

Since making his international debut in 2004, Sreejesh has improved leaps and bounds and has not only become India’s numero uno goalkeeper but one of the world’s best in the business.

“We are hoping Sreejesh will stand up and deliver once again just like the way he proved himself during the recently concluded World Cup,” Sardar said ahead of the Glasgow Games to be held from July 23 to August 3.

“It is a sense of pride for me and the entire team when we see Sreejesh motivate all of us. This time the team wants to stand up to his expectations,” he said.

North Korea threatens to boycott Asian Games

Seoul: North Korea today threatened to pull out of next month’s Asian Games in South Korea, blaming Seoul for the breakdown of talks on Pyongyang’s participation.

The North’s official KCNA news agency said the talks in the border truce village of Panmunjom on Thursday had turned sour following what it suggested was the intervention of the presidential Blue House in Seoul. After a long delay, the South began the afternoon session with a series of “absurd” demands that overturned everything agreed in the morning, KCNA said.

As well as raising concerns over the number of North Korean athletes and cheerleaders, it sought to place restrictions on the size of the North Korean flag to be displayed at the Asiad, the agency said.

Another apparent point of contention was who would foot the bill for the Northern delegation during its stay in South Korea.
