Sindhu, Saina, Srikanth in Q/F
gold Coast: Star Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal and new World No 1 Kidambi Srikanth cruised into the quarterfinals of their respective singles events with easy wins in the Commonwealth Games badminton competition here on Thursday. It was an all-win day for the Indian shuttlers as everyone stormed into the last-eight stage in their respective events. Sindhu, who has recovered from an ankle injury, was stretched a bit by her Australian opponent Hsuan-Yu Wendy Chen in the first game before clinching the match 21-15, 21-9 in a 34-minute round of 16 women's singles match. The Rio Olympics silver medallist did not play in the mixed team event which was won by India. "She (Chen) is a junior player, so she's doing really well. I didn't take it easy because you never know anything can happen at any moment. I just played my game and finished it off," Sindhu said after her match.
Manika in semis; Mouma out
Manika Batra cruised to the semifinals of the women's singles even as experienced paddler Mouma Das ended her campaign of the Commonwealth Games here on Thursday. Manika, who played a stellar role in India's historic gold in the women's team event, notched up a win against Singapore's Yihan Zhou 4-1. The Delhi paddler hardly broke a sweat in the first three games, winning 11-5, 11-6, 11-2. However, she was unable to finish the match as she stumbled in the fourth game 6-11 but sealed the match with a 11-9 win in the fifth game. In the other women's singles, Mouma was ousted by Yu Mengyu of Singapore 13-15, 7-11, 5-11, 11-7, 5-11.
Pallikal-Ghosal in semis
The Indian duo of Dipika Pallikal and Saurav Ghosal advanced to the semifinals of the squash mixed double's event even as compatriots Joshna Chinappa and Harinder Pal Sandhu crashed out of the Commonwealth Games here on Thursday. The fifth seeded pair, who had a shaky pre-quarterfinal match against a Malaysian duo, was in terrific touch in the quarterfinal match against third seed Tesni Evans and Peter Creed of Wales. The match witnessed a surfeit of rallies and eventually it was the skill in finding the corners and nick that mattered. Both Saurav and Dipika never left anything to chance and played with a lot of confidence to script a 11-8, 11-10 win and stun the fancied opponents. They will face top seeds Joelle King and Paul Coll of New Zealand in the semifinals on Friday.
