English cricket authorities on Wednesday asked a Pakistani court to help them recover almost 250,000 pounds ($390,000) in fines and costs levelled against banned leg-spinner Danish Kaneria for spot-fixing.
A disciplinary panel of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) banned Kaneria in June 2012 after he was found guilty of corruption while playing for Essex county in a limited-overs match in 2009.
The panel imposed a fine of 100,000 pounds on Kaneria.
Khawaja Naveed, a lawyer for the ECB, said the petition in the Sindh High Court in Karachi demands Kaneria pay the fine as well as additional costs incurred over the course of the case.
“I have filed a petition on behalf of the ECB in which we have demanded that a total cost of 249,000 pounds be recovered from Kaneria,” Naveed said.
Naveed said a notice would be issued to Kaneria and in case the spinner fails to pay, the ECB had asked the court to demand the player sell his property.
Kaneria vows to fight
Kaneria has vowed to challenge the move. “I have read that the ECB has filed a petition, in which they want the court to order me to pay them costs for the spot fixing hearings,” Kaneria said.
“Until now I have received no formal notice from them or their lawyer but when it comes I will consult my lawyers. But I will fight this also to the end,” he added. Kaneria said he was facing financial problems because of which he had delayed filing an appeal with CAS in Geneva, which was his last resort.
