Dropped chances hurt new zealand

Despite India's utter dominance, New Zealand will look back at their dropped catches and will ponder what might have been if those chances had been taken.

Both openers were dropped pretty early in their innings and if only Kiwis fielders were as sharp as their opposite numbers, then the state of the match could have been totally different.

In the very second over, Dhawan tried to cut the ball over the inside circle but failed to connect it properly as it went straight to Mitchell Santner, who failed to hold the fast-approaching ball.

In the seventh over, Rohit got a lifeline. From de Grandhomme's delivery, Sharma tried to clear the ropes, but mistimed the shot. However, the diving Tim Southee couldn't hold onto the ball at long-off. Both players made New Zealand pay for it, notching up fifties on their way to scoring India's highest-ever partnership for any wicket - 158 runs.

later, Kohli got a life when an on-rushing Guptill failed to take the Indian skipper's mistimed shot at deep mid-wicket.
