Doping shame for lifters

A major scandal unfurled when 21 weightlifters tested positive for banned substances by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) in April testifying to India's  third rank on the World Sports Doping list. This controversy emerged highly scandalous after noted players like Punjab's Simranpreet Kaur, who won a gold medal in 63kg in both the Youth and Junior categories, tested positive, besides Amritpal Singh (85kg, gold) and ArshdeepKaur (58kg, silver) in the same tournament. Also, 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Geeta Rani (Punjab), Harjeet Kaur (Haryana) and Mangte P Kom (Chandigarh), besides Komal Wakale from Maharashtra, were amongst those who tested positive. A large chunk of weightlifters that tested positive in the test were from Delhi, Punjab and Haryana making it newsworthy compelling the Indian Weightlifting Federation to consider an impositionof a year-long ban on Delhi, Punjab and Haryana for being the worst offenders. All the players were provisionally suspended and faced the risk of a further four year ban if their "B" samples tested positive. Indian Weightlifting Federation secretary general Sahdev Yadav said, "This can be called as one of the biggest catches in recent times but one has to take into consideration that it includes competitions at Universities, Police Games, Railways, etc also.”
