Delhi Dreams will go head to head with Pune Marathas in the final of the Champions Tennis league at the RK Khanna Stadium here on Wednesday.
led by Spanish star Juan Carlos Ferrero, Delhi’s hopes of winning the inaugural tournament will be boosted by the support of the home crowd. Ferrero, a former world No. 1, has won all of his singles matches in the competition so far while the other legend in the fray — Pat Cash has lost all of his matches.
Speaking about the matchup, Ferrero said, “I’ve never had the opportunity to play with him but tomorrow I will. I have seen him play multiple times on the TV so I hope it will be great.”
Arguably the most interesting match will see Agnieszka Radwanska of Pune face Jelena Jankowic of Delhi. The duo have faced each other seven times with the Polish girl prevailing five times. Their last meeting came on clay in Rome where Jankowic won 6-4, 6-4 however in their last meeting on hard court, as will be the case for the final, Radwanska won a battle at Indian Wells in March.
On the matchup, the Serb Jankowic considers it yet another match and she will go for it all like she always does. “As a player I just concentrate on the court and give it my all. I’ve had some tough matches with Radwanska in the past and I look forward to playing against her tomorrow.
“It’s fun playing for your team, for Delhi Dreams, and we’re playing at home. Hopefully it’ll be a full stadium and the atmosphere will be great so we can all enjoy.”
Radwanska who has won three of her four sets in the competition echoed the Serb’s assessment. “It’s always tough playing her. We’ve played many times over the years and it has always been a challenge. I expect it will be the same tomorrow and look forward to it.”
Pat Cash who started the concept of climbing into the player’s box after his Wimbledon win in 1987 hoped for everyone to enjoy in the end. “It’s been joyful for everyone involved. We would like to see a full house tomorrow, even if it is to support Delhi,” he concluded.
